DOT Physicals: Frequently Asked Questions

We know that your CDL is your livelihood. It’s natural to feel a bit of "white coat syndrome" or worry about your exam. Here is what you can expect at COHC to help put your mind at ease.

I’m nervous about my blood pressure. What happens if it’s high?

Being nervous can naturally raise your blood pressure. If your reading is high, we don’t rush to a conclusion. We often allow you to sit quietly for a few minutes to relax before taking a second reading. Our goal is to get an accurate, calm measurement of your health.

How long will I be waiting?

We know you have a schedule to keep. Because we specialize in occupational health, our office is streamlined to avoid the long, unpredictable waits of a general urgent care or hospital. Most of our drivers find themselves in and out much faster than they expected.

What should I bring to make the visit go smoothly?

To keep your wait time minimal and your stress low, please bring:

  • Your valid Driver’s License.

  • A list of current medications (including dosage and the prescribing doctor's name).

  • Your glasses, contacts, or hearing aids if you use them.

  • A bottle of water (you will need to provide a small urine sample for the kidney screen).

What if I have a pre-existing condition (like Diabetes or Sleep Apnea)?

Having a medical condition does not automatically mean you won't pass. It simply means we need the right paperwork. Bringing a recent clearance letter from your specialist or your CPAP compliance report helps us issue your medical card on the same day.

A Helpful Checklist for Your Visit

Before you head over, take a quick look at this checklist to ensure you have everything you need. This helps avoid the stress of a second trip!

  1. Hydrate: Drink plenty of water before you arrive.

  2. Medications: Have your list or bottles ready.

  3. Recent Surgery? Bring a "release for work" note from your surgeon.

  4. Stay Calm: We are here to help you stay on the road, not to find reasons to keep you off it.

Managing Specific Health Conditions

Having a medical condition doesn't mean you can't drive; it just means we need to ensure it is being managed safely. To avoid delays, please bring the following documentation based on your health history:

  • Cardiovascular (Heart) Health If you have a history of heart attack, stents, or heart disease, please bring a recent report from your cardiologist. This usually includes a "clearance for work" letter and results from your most recent stress test (done within the last 1–2 years depending on the condition).

  • Respiratory (Lung) Problems If you have COPD, asthma, or other lung issues, please bring a list of your inhalers or medications. If you use supplemental oxygen, we will need a note from your doctor explaining your lung function levels.

  • Joint & Muscle Diseases For conditions like severe arthritis or joint replacements, our focus is on your ability to safely operate the vehicle (steering, braking, and getting in/out of the cab). If you have a physical impairment, please let us know so we can discuss the "Skill Performance Evaluation" (SPE) certificate if necessary.

Why These Details Matter

We ask for this information upfront because it allows us to issue your medical card the same day. Our goal is to prevent you from having to go back and forth between our office and your specialist.
